all the fur on the runway at the a/w 10 fashion shows has given me a new appreciation of the emerging sculptors exhibit at riverviews artspace, which comes down this sunday. (go check it out at their last fridays party tonight!) the artists in the show have all given me a lot of texture to take in, and hairy fur is a main player.
i love these ladders leading into hairy wombs by stephanie williams. the ladders remind me of my favorite book invisible cities by italo calvino, who describes a magical city connected by a series of ladders, catwalks, pulleys and ropes. i could stare at this sculpture for days tracing all the various paths from cocoon to cocoon.
there's the curator of this fine show erin stover (scroll down to the bottom of that link!) hiding in the corner!
the sculptures made by the layering of paper by melody gulick remind me of a thick head of hair. she actually was as a set designer for the clothing store anthropologie before taking up art full time, and you can totally see that hand-crafted romantic nature coming through in these lit trees and underwater organisms.
and these sculptures by jeff vick are real hairy. i can imagine it as a beautiful fascinator affixed to the side of a lady's head. except for the fact that they are heavy plaster... but still, so beautiful and strange! as is the entire show.
